A 66-year-old man from New Hampshire has been hospitalized for weeks after contracting Powassan virus, a rare but serious tick-borne illness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Powassan virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick and is most commonly reported in the Northeast and Great Lakes regions of the United States.

Why It's Important?

Powassan virus poses significant health risks, particularly for individuals in tick-heavy regions like the Northeast and Great Lakes. While the virus is rare, it can lead to severe complications, including brain infections (encephalitis) and meningitis. Symptoms range from fever and headache to confusion, seizures, and loss of coordination. Approximately 10% of severe cases result in death, and half of those who survive severe illness may experience long-term health issues such as memory problems and muscle weakness. The lack of vaccines or treatments underscores the importance of preventive measures to reduce exposure to ticks.
